"For years, I have dreamt of the same city, a place I have never actually visited. In my dreams, I always visit this city at night, in the twilight. The city is glowing, colourful, and situated on a slope by the sea."
The works in the "Neon Night Cities" exhibition aim to crystallize the atmosphere and landscapes of this dream city. All the works depict a place that the artist has only visited in her imagination.
In her practice, Minna Ristolainen works toward distilling remembered images and recurring motifs into a concentrated visual form. Her paintings operate through an expressive, semi-abstract language, where architectural elements and urban structures are reduced to colours and forms. The artworks construct an emotional logic of one, filtered through personal memory, imagination, and association.
"I aim to create a strongly subjective, emotional, and interpretative experience for the recipient through my art." This focus on how images are read and experienced also connects to Ristolainen’s academic research, in which she has examined the interpretive experience of visual art through narratology in her Master’s thesis.
The paintings share strong, glowing colours, which Minna uses to capture the atmosphere of dreams. Welcome to visit the Neon Night Cities!
