LUST FOR NIGHT
Samu Kuukka

Warm welcome to the exhibition opening on Thursday, 17 September, from 17 to 21 💙
‘Lust For Night’ explores urban nightlife in a highly intimate, involved style, but one that aesthetically moves away from the cool detachment and realism of traditional documentary photography.

In this vibrant series of nightology, the hedonism, rites, transgressions, and mythologies of the carnivalesque timespace of the big city night are brought before us in impressionistic and surrealistic film photography. Sexy, dangerous, and irreverent, all these bohemians, nightbirds, and other noctambulants - artists, actors, musicians, philosophers, poets, and models, and demimondaines - take the city to themselves after the bourgeoisie has turned off the nightstand light.

After dark, power shifts from the mighty to the meek and for the outsider, the night becomes a safe haven, something to disappear into, to eschew unwanted attention, or to escape the surveillance and the all-reaching hands of the system. In the city, the night is much more than the opposite of daytime. It is a culture of its own, it is a half-world fit for another, alternative, subversive lifestyle.

Samu Kuukka is a photographic artist, filmmaker, and musician based out of Helsinki. In his visual work, he examines the human condition in the era of postmodernism and late capitalism. He looks for random glints of bittersweet beauty and melancholy, and usually finds these in liminal places and moments.

The exhibition is on view from 17.9 till 27.9. Our doors are open Tue-Sat 14-18 and Sun 13-17. Free entry. Warm welcome.
