Eeva Paavela
Softshell
Eeva Paavela (1997) is a Helsinki-based painter who graduated as a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts of Helsinki in 2023, and has since continued to the master’s degree program. A recurring theme in Paavela’s work is to evoke a sense of intimacy through attraction. While the images may at first glance appear reserved and taciturn, they are signaling to the viewer to come closer. The paintings do not declare anything, but rather invite the viewer to an intimate conversation.
Known for her interest in memory, interpersonal relationships, and the affective bodily experiences, Paavela turns her attention here to the metaphor of the shell, both as physical form and psychological state.
In Softshell, Paavela explores the tension between vulnerability and protection through naturalistic, figurative oil paintings on linen. Shells evoke dreams of protected space. “The shell is a refuge for the ugliest and most unlovable form of oneself. But I am not only advocating for shell life here. The shell is not merely a tomb; its inhabitant must emerge sooner or later,” Paavela writes.
“A painting is much like a shell in the sense that its beautiful surface contains an embarrassing explosion of being from the artist. I have to make paintings about things that are so personal, intimate, gross and awkward, and then hang them up for all to see. But herein lies the beauty of the shell: protected space, valorised space, conceals that which you do not want to share with me, but which we both know all too well. What is a conversation between shells like? Probably much like the one between a painting and its viewer, united in the dialogue of solitude.”
Paavela’s work has been acquired by over 20 private collectors, indicating strong and growing interest in her practice at an early stage of her career. Her paintings appeal to those who seek technically accomplished work grounded in psychological insight and subtle emotional tension. With a consistent body of work and clear artistic voice, Paavela is establishing herself as a painter whose work holds long-term relevance.
